Interactive Cultural Cooking Demonstrations
Coming from a rich lineage steeped in culinary heritage, Shyril has woven her passion for food into every facet of her career. Starting with humble roots, she actively participated in the annual Farmer's Weeks for the B.V.I., embracing the local culture and traditions with each dish she prepared.
Transitioning into the role of a private chef, Shyril honed her skills and elevated her craft, all while staying true to her Virgin Islander roots. But her journey didn't stop there. Recognizing the importance of passing on her knowledge, she embarked on a new path as a Home Economics educator at the public high school, for over two decades.
Yet, Shyril's dedication to preserving tradition goes beyond the classroom. With each brick carefully laid, she resurrects a piece of island heritage, reviving the tradition of the brick oven. This endeavor not only pays homage to the elders of her community but also ensures that these time-honored practices endure for generations to come. She truly embodies the essence of a Virgin Islander, bridging the past with the present through her culinary journey making sure locals never forget, new adventurers and foodies can take with them an experience that resonates with the soul.
Bridging The Gap
Keeping traditions alive is at the heart of the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP). Established in 2007, YEP serves as a sanctuary, offering a range of opportunities and engaging activities for young people. One of its notable partnerships is with The Brick Oven, where the essence of heritage is passed down to the next generation.
Through collaborative efforts, YEP and The Brick Oven strive to educate and inspire the youth about the roots of their community. By delving into the past, they provide a window into what life was like before modern developments took hold. It's a journey that not only imparts valuable knowledge but also fosters a deep appreciation for the cultural legacy that shapes their identity.
Together, YEP and The Brick Oven are more than just educational platforms; they are guardians of tradition, ensuring that the vibrant tapestry of history is woven into the fabric of the future. With each interaction and lesson, they empower young minds to embrace their heritage and carry it forward with pride.
